Barcelona Sants, officially Barcelona Sants Estacio, is Barcelona's main railway station and Spain's busiest outside Madrid. Located in the Sants-Montjuic district to the west of the city centre, the station serves as the primary hub for high-speed AVE services, long-distance and regional trains, and international connections to France. The station is owned and managed by Adif (Administrador de Infraestructuras Ferroviarias). Built in the 1970s and completed in 1979, the modern station has all platforms underground. A hotel (Hotel Barcelo Sants) occupies the upper floors of the main building. The station has 14 platforms: platforms 1 to 6 are standard-gauge tracks serving AVE high-speed trains, Avlo, Iryo, Ouigo and SNCF TGV services, while platforms 7 to 14 use Iberian gauge for Renfe long-distance, Media Distancia (regional) and Rodalies de Catalunya (suburban) trains. Passengers travelling on long-distance and high-speed trains from platforms 1-6 must pass through luggage security screening before accessing the platforms. This is similar to airport screening but faster - laptops and liquids do not need to be removed. Train doors close 2 minutes before departure, so arriving at least 30 minutes early is recommended. The station has two main entrances: one from Placa dels Paisos Catalans and one from Placa Joan Peiro, connected by metro lines L3 (green) and L5 (blue) at the Sants Estacio stop.

Tips & Insider Advice
Security Screening for High-Speed Trains
All passengers on long-distance and high-speed trains (platforms 1-6) must pass through luggage security screening. The process is faster than airport security - you do not need to remove laptops or liquids. Lines can be long but move quickly. Arrive at least 30 minutes before your departure time. Train doors close 2 minutes before departure.
Know Your Platform Type
Platforms 1-6 serve AVE, Avlo, Iryo, Ouigo and TGV high-speed/long-distance trains (standard gauge). Platforms 7-14 serve Renfe regional (Media Distancia) and suburban (Rodalies) trains (Iberian gauge). Departure screens are separate for each type - check the correct screen for your service.
Metro L3 Gets You to La Rambla Quickly
Metro line L3 (green) from Sants Estacio connects directly to Liceu station (halfway along La Rambla) in just a few stops. Line L5 (blue) also serves the station and connects to Diagonal, Verdaguer and Sagrada Familia. The metro entrance is on the platform 1 side of the station.
Left Luggage in the Basement
The staffed luggage storage (Consigna) is one floor below the car park. Walk to the platform 14 side of the station, follow signs down the steps or lift. Open daily 05:30-23:00. Bags are X-rayed before storage. Allow extra time to queue when collecting bags before your train.
Airport Connection via R2 Nord
The Rodalies R2 Nord train runs from Barcelona Sants to El Prat Airport Terminal 2 in approximately 20-25 minutes, departing roughly every 30 minutes. A free shuttle bus connects Terminal 2 to Terminal 1 (runs 24/7, every 5-7 minutes). Make sure you take R2 Nord, not R2 Sud - they are different lines.
Multiple Ticket Offices for Different Services
Renfe long-distance ticket windows and Rodalies (suburban) ticket windows are in separate areas. Iryo has its own Casa Iryo desk near the main entrance. Ouigo does not have a customer service point at the station. For long-distance tickets, booking online in advance is strongly recommended to avoid queues.
