Madrid Puerta de Atocha - Complete Station Guide
Madrid, Spain
Plaza del Emperador Carlos V, s/n, 28012 Madrid, Spain
Open 24 hours (main concourse accessible around the clock)
Madrid Puerta de Atocha is Spain's busiest and most iconic railway station, serving as the southern gateway for high-speed AVE trains connecting the capital to Barcelona, Seville, Malaga, Valencia and beyond. Officially renamed from "Madrid-Puerta de Atocha" to "Madrid Puerta de Atocha" following a major renovation completed in 2024, the station handles over 30 million passengers annually across 15 high-speed terminus platforms and 10 underground Cercanias commuter platforms. Three competing high-speed operators - Renfe (AVE and Avlo), Ouigo Spain and Iryo - all depart from Atocha, giving travelers an unprecedented choice of services and price points on Spain's extensive alta velocidad network. The station's most famous feature is the spectacular tropical garden housed inside the original 1892 iron-and-glass trainshed designed by Alberto de Palacio. When the high-speed tracks were relocated to a modern extension in 1992, the historic hall was transformed into an indoor botanical garden containing more than 7,000 tropical plants from around the world. Today this soaring glass atrium, with its towering palm trees and peaceful turtle ponds, serves as the station's social heart - surrounded by cafes, restaurants and the Renfe and Iryo ticket offices. Atocha sits at the southern edge of central Madrid, just a short walk from the Museo del Prado, the Reina Sofia museum and the leafy Retiro Park. The station is well connected to the city via Metro Line 1 (Atocha Renfe stop), multiple Cercanias commuter lines linking to Chamartin station in the north, and frequent city bus services. Note that all high-speed departures require airport-style security screening with X-ray baggage scanners, so plan to arrive at least 15-20 minutes before your scheduled departure.
