Wien Hauptbahnhof - Vienna Central Station Guide

Vienna, Austria

Am Hauptbahnhof 1, 1100 Wien, Austria

Station Hours

Open 24 hours (main concourse accessible around the clock)

Wien Hauptbahnhof is Vienna's modern central railway station, fully opened in December 2015. It replaced three separate older termini including the former Wien Sudbahnhof and Wien Ostbahnhof. As a through-station rather than a dead-end terminus, Wien Hauptbahnhof allows trains to pass directly through Vienna, significantly improving rail connections across the city and beyond. The station features 12 platforms spread over two levels. Platforms 1 and 2 are located on the underground level and serve S-Bahn suburban and regional trains, while platforms 3 through 12 sit above ground on a viaduct and handle mainline domestic and international services operated by OBB, WESTbahn, RegioJet, and other carriers. The station complex includes the BahnhofCity Wien shopping centre with a wide range of shops, restaurants, and services. Wien Hauptbahnhof is well connected to the Vienna public transport network. The U1 metro line provides a direct link to Stephansplatz in the city centre (approximately 2.9 km, around 5 minutes by metro), while Tram D connects to other parts of the city. Taxis are readily available outside the station. The OBB Lounge on the upper level offers complimentary refreshments, WiFi, and a quiet space for first-class and sleeping-car passengers.
