Munich Hauptbahnhof (Munchen Hbf) - Complete Station Guide
Munich, Germany
Bayerstr. 10a, 80335 Munich, Germany
Open 24 hours daily
Munich Hauptbahnhof (Munchen Hbf) is the main railway station in the Bavarian capital and one of the busiest rail hubs in Europe, serving approximately 450,000 passengers every day. Located in the heart of Munich at Bayerstrasse, the station is the gateway to southern Germany and a critical junction for international routes connecting Austria, Switzerland, Italy and beyond. Whether you are arriving on a high-speed ICE from Berlin or a Railjet from Vienna, Munich Hauptbahnhof places you right in the city center, just a 15-minute walk from Marienplatz. The current station building dates from the 1950s, rebuilt in a modernist style after significant damage during World War II. It is a terminus station, meaning all mainline platforms end inside the station hall. The station features 32 platforms in total: platforms 1-2 serve underground S-Bahn services, platforms 5-10 form the Holzkirchen wing for local and regional trains, platforms 11-26 make up the grand main hall for long-distance and international services, and platforms 27-36 comprise the Starnberger wing for regional and EuroCity services. A major renovation project is currently underway to modernize the station infrastructure. Munich Hauptbahnhof offers a wide range of traveler amenities including luggage lockers, free WiFi (WIFI@DB network), a DB Lounge for first-class and BahnCard holders, extensive shopping and dining options, and full accessibility with level access from street to platforms. The station sits at the intersection of multiple U-Bahn, S-Bahn and tram lines, making onward travel to any part of Munich and its surroundings seamless. All eight S-Bahn lines pass through the underground platforms, and U-Bahn lines U1, U2, U4, U5, U7 and U8 all stop here.
