Praha hlavni nadrazi (Prague Main Station) is the largest and busiest railway station in the Czech Republic, serving as the primary gateway for both domestic and international train travel. Located in the heart of Prague near Wenceslas Square, the station handles over 74,000 passengers daily and connects the city to major European destinations including Vienna, Berlin, Munich, Budapest, and Krakow. The station is a vital hub for Czech Railways (CD), as well as private operators RegioJet and Leo Express, and international services operated by OBB and Deutsche Bahn. The station is renowned for its stunning Art Nouveau upper hall, designed by architect Josef Fanta and completed in 1909. Known locally as the Fanta Building (Fantova budova), it features an ornate decorated dome, intricate sculptural reliefs, and elegant stained glass elements that make it one of Prague's most beautiful yet often overlooked architectural landmarks. The original station was built in 1871 as Franz Josef Station (Nadrazi cisare Frantiska Josefa I) and has undergone several major renovations while preserving its historic character. The modern station experience centres on the underground concourse, completed during a major renovation in 2006-2011. This lower level houses a shopping gallery, food court, ticket offices, and direct access to Metro Line C (red line) at Hlavni nadrazi station. Travellers will find comprehensive facilities including luggage storage, currency exchange, ATMs, and free WiFi throughout the station. With its combination of historic grandeur above and modern convenience below, Praha hlavni nadrazi offers a uniquely memorable arrival experience in the Czech capital.

Tips & Insider Advice

Visit the Art Nouveau Hall

Before rushing to your platform, take a few minutes to visit the upper level Fanta Building. The ornate dome, sculptural details, and stained glass of this 1909 Art Nouveau masterpiece are spectacular - and most travellers walk right past without noticing. Access is free via the main staircase or lift from the concourse.

Use Metro Line C for City Access

Metro Line C (red line) - Hlavni nadrazi station is directly connected to the underground concourse. It takes just one stop to reach Muzeum (interchange with Line A for Old Town) or two stops to Florenc (interchange with Line B and the bus station). A 30-minute ticket costs approximately 30 CZK.

Exchange Currency Wisely

The Czech Republic uses Czech Koruna (CZK), not euros. Avoid the exchange offices inside the station as they typically offer poor rates. Instead, use an ATM (bankomat) to withdraw CZK directly, or exchange at reputable offices in the city centre. Many station shops accept card payments.

Luggage Storage Options

The station offers manned luggage storage (uschovna zavazadel) on the underground level near platforms 1-2, open daily from 06:00 to 22:00. Prices start around 100 CZK per item per day. For shorter visits, this is ideal for exploring Prague without dragging your bags.

Wenceslas Square Is a 5-Minute Walk

Exit the station from the main (upper) entrance facing Wilsonova street, turn right, and Wenceslas Square - the vibrant heart of Prague's New Town - is just a 5-minute walk away. The Old Town Square and Charles Bridge are about 15-20 minutes on foot.

Navigate Platforms with Ease

The station has platforms 1 through 5 (with sub-platforms like 1a, 1b). International trains to Vienna, Berlin, and Budapest typically depart from platforms 1-3. Check the large departure boards in the underground concourse and allow extra time - the walk from the concourse to distant platforms can take 5 minutes.
