О компании GWR

Great Western Railway (GWR) is one of the UK's largest train operators, running services from London Paddington across the West of England, South Wales, the Cotswolds and the Thames Valley. Core intercity routes link London with Reading, Oxford, Bath, Bristol Temple Meads, Cardiff and Swansea, and continue west to Exeter, Plymouth and Penzance, with regional services reaching Cheltenham, Hereford, Salisbury, Weymouth and Portsmouth. GWR services are part of the National Rail network, the UK's shared passenger rail system operated by its train companies.

The long-distance fleet is built around Intercity Express Trains (Class 800 and 802), part of Hitachi's AT300 family and built on Japanese high-speed technology. These trains offer two travel classes: Standard and First. Standard features include free Wi-Fi, at-seat power, air conditioning, and an at-seat refreshments service on most departures. First class adds wider reclining seats, larger tables with plug and USB sockets, complimentary food and drink and access to First Class lounges at London Paddington, Cardiff, Penzance and Truro. Overnight travel between London and Cornwall is served by the Night Riviera sleeper, with a choice of airline-style seats and single or double berth cabins.

Class availability and the exact range of onboard services can vary by route, fleet and service. The specific offer — including fare conditions — is always shown for your selected connection at the time of booking, so it is recommended to check it before buying.

Every IET offers two travel classes — Standard and First — with free Wi-Fi, at-seat power, and air conditioning in Standard. First class adds wider reclining seats, larger tables with plug and USB sockets, complimentary food and drink at your seat, and access to First Class lounges at London Paddington, Cardiff, Penzance and Truro.

Правила провоза багажа

Every passenger can bring up to three pieces of luggage on board: cabin-style bags, laptop bags and handbags fit under your seat or in the overhead racks, while larger standard suitcases (up to 25 × 40 × 75 cm) go in the luggage rack at the end of each carriage. Surfboards can only be carried on the Night Riviera sleeper and local services.

Bicycles travel free on GWR services and a bike reservation is strongly advised where available; it can be added when booking your ticket and made up to one hour before the train departs its origin station. Folding bikes with wheels up to 20 inches can be brought on any train at any time as long as they stay folded. Road-legal e-bikes are permitted; e-scooters are banned on all GWR trains and stations. On the Night Riviera a bike reservation is mandatory, and weekday peak-time restrictions apply at London Paddington.

Book Early for the Lowest Fares

Advance tickets are GWR's cheapest fares, tied to a specific train and released up to 24 weeks before departure for weekday journeys and 12 weeks for weekends. They are limited in number on every service, so booking early gives you the best chance of the lowest price.

Know Your Fare: Advance, Off-Peak, Super Off-Peak and Anytime

GWR's main fare types are Advance (cheapest, fixed to one train, non-refundable but changeable for a £10 admin fee plus any fare difference), Off-Peak and Super Off-Peak (cheaper travel outside the busiest times) and Anytime (fully flexible, no restrictions). The exact conditions for your booking are shown at the time of purchase, so it is recommended to check before buying.

Save Up to 1/3 with a UK Railcard

Most UK Railcards — including 16-25, 26-30, Senior, Two Together and Family & Friends — offer around one-third off eligible fares. Railcard holders must carry their Railcard when they travel.

    Children Under 5 Travel Free

Up to two children under 5 can travel free with each fare-paying adult on GWR trains. Children aged 5-15 travel at half fare, and GWR also offers a fixed-price Family Ticket (up to 2 adults and 4 children, to or from London Paddington) and GroupSave (1/3 off Off-Peak fares for 3-9 people travelling together).

Upgrade to First on Weekends from £10

On weekends and public holidays you can upgrade a Standard ticket to First class on board, from the train crew, from as little as £10 with Weekend First — the price depends on the number of zones you travel through. On weekdays, GWR offers First class upgrades through the Seatfrog app.
