About LNER
London North Eastern Railway (LNER) is one of the UK's leading long-distance train operators, running services along the East Coast Main Line between London King's Cross and destinations across North East England and Scotland. Core routes link London with Peterborough, York, Newcastle and Edinburgh, and continue north to cities including Aberdeen and Inverness, as well as branching to Leeds, Harrogate and Lincoln. LNER services are part of the National Rail network, the UK's shared passenger rail system operated by its train companies.
The fleet is built around Azuma trains, which use Japanese high-speed technology and offer travellers two classes: Standard and First. Standard features include extra legroom, free WiFi for every customer, ergonomically designed seats, electronic seat reservation displays and access to the Let’s Eat Café Bar. First class adds reclining seats, larger tables, at-seat power and USB charging, complimentary catering and enhanced WiFi.
Class availability and the exact range of onboard services can vary by route and service. The specific offer — including fare conditions — is always displayed for your selected connection at the time of booking, so it is recommended to check it before buying.

Introduced from May 2019, the Azuma fleet forms the backbone of LNER services on the East Coast Main Line. Built by Hitachi using Japanese high-speed technology, the fleet includes electric sets for fully electrified routes and bi-mode sets that switch to diesel power beyond the wires, allowing through services to destinations such as Aberdeen and Inverness. Every Azuma offers two travel classes — Standard and First — with extra legroom compared to LNER's legacy fleet, ergonomically designed seats, electronic seat reservation displays, window blinds and free WiFi for every customer. Standard-class travellers can visit the Let’s Eat Café Bar — located in Coach G on 9-coach Azumas and Coach B on 5- and 10-coach sets; First class adds reclining seats, larger tables, at-seat power and USB charging, complimentary catering and enhanced WiFi.

Luggage Policy
Every passenger can bring up to three pieces of luggage on board: one large case (up to 90 × 70 × 30 cm), one medium bag such as a cabin-style case, and one small personal item like a handbag or laptop case. Large cases go in the luggage racks at the end of each coach; medium bags fit in the overhead racks or between seats; and small personal items can be placed under your seat.
Pushchairs must be folded and stored in a suitable rack, not left in the aisle. Bicycles travel free on all LNER services, but a bike reservation is compulsory and can be added when booking your ticket; folding bikes can be brought on board without a reservation as long as they stay folded and fit in the luggage rack. Bikes must not exceed 25 kg in weight, 200 cm in length, 85 cm handlebar width and 8.5 cm tyre width.

Booking Tips
Book Early for the Lowest Fares
Advance tickets are LNER's cheapest fares and are released at least 12 weeks before departure — often much earlier. They are limited in number on every train, so the earlier you book, the better your chance of securing the lowest price.
Know Your Fare: Advance, 70min Flex and Anytime
LNER's core fares are Advance (the cheapest, fixed to one specific train), 70min Flex (semi-flexible — start your journey up to 70 minutes earlier or later than booked, available on most London–North routes) and Anytime (fully flexible). Off-Peak singles remain on some journeys. Advance tickets are non-refundable, but under LNER's fare conditions they can be changed to a different date or time for a £10 admin fee plus any difference in fare. The exact change and refund options for your booking — including any applicable fees — are always shown at the time of booking and in your account, and our customer service team can help with any change.
Save Up to 1/3 with a UK Railcard
Most Railcards — including 16-25, 26-30, Senior, Two Together and Family & Friends — offer around one-third off eligible fares. They cost £35 for one year (£20 for the Disabled Persons Railcard) and often pay for themselves in a single long-distance journey. If you hold a Railcard, select it when searching so your discount is applied to eligible fares.
Children Under 5 Travel Free
Up to two children under 5 can travel free with each fare-paying adult on LNER trains. If the train is busy, younger children may need to sit on your lap. Children aged 5-15 travel with a 50% discount.
Reserve Your Seat — and Your Bike — for Free
Seat reservations on LNER trains are free. Reserved seats show digital reservation displays above them, so they are easy to find on board. If you are travelling with a bike, remember that a bike reservation is also free but is compulsory on every LNER service — spaces are limited, so add it when you book.
